Niks' world

The way my not-yet 6 year-old looks at the world: (Note: For all the bigness he's obsessed with, you only realise his perspective in the last line.)

What’s the big fishie, Niks?

It’s the biggest creature in the world. A blue whale. But bigger. A blue sperm whale. What’s sperm, Mama?

It’s - ahem -(changing topic) – what’s the thing on top of it?
A dinosaur. Biggest in the world. Its spines can turn into legs when it turns upside down. So it can have 18 legs.

Niks, no one can have 18 legs.
Why not?
Ok, so what’s the building? Our building?
No – it’s the Burj Khalifa. This dino’s taller than the Burj Khalifa!
Phew, what a big dino!
No, Mama. And here’s the best part. He’s only a baby. See the face? That’s the dino Mama!
WOW! That’s so gigantic, Niks, and what are those birds on the other side?
They’re pterodactyls all flying down towards the dot.
What’s that tiny dot, Niks?
Mama - That’s a Man.

  1. The world of children is so pure and so scientific in it's truest sense. The universe is really not intended to be created around Man alone. We are merely one of it's jigsaw pieces. And as Nik's says a tiny dot of one. Bravo, Child!

    1. hope he remembers he's human too, of course!

    2. Jandy: the only way he will remember he's human too is by watching humanity around him and that's something we need to practice for him to learn/remember.

Listening to a child is accepting/respecting him.

    1. I'm surprised too, Ira. I don't think we pay enough attention to all these little thoughts that keep going on in their little heads, ya? And the scraps of paper they're drawing on all day long. :)

    2. Ira: Niks represents every living child on this planet who think and envision the world with the similar wisdom, its us who are so arrogant, ignorant and inflated with our egos that we ignore these little 'dots'.

Jandy: Read this quote to him and I am sure he will ask you 'the meaning of word fear'.
"Taking a new step, uttering a new word is what people fear most. - Fyodor Dostoyevsky

    3. I so agree Alok... I see Aaria when she draws and the story of what she does... we are the closed minded people!!!!!!!!!!! adults need to learn to listen and see the world as pure as they see

    4. And Alok, sad as it is - I see Neel, at not even 3 years older, learning the meaning of 'fear' now - or rather - of shyness. He is too shy to take the first step in a crowd of new kids now, whereas Niks doesn't know the meaning of fear yet, you're right, or rather Fyodor D is right. The fear of going wrong or being ridiculed is what finally reins in our imaginations, so that we adults begin to see the world in straight shapes and shades, like it's expected to be, and not the way we imagine it to be.

    1. Don't worry, Life Begins... He only knows the names of all the dinos - and how to draw them - not how to spell them. the spelling was mine :) (after checking google baba too)

    2. Jandy: talking of spellings; the other day I overheard two boys (Neel's age) at a local supermarket close to my house discussing the 'F' word, one of them said 'my dad spells that word to my mom when I am around'.

  8. I am in love with Niks' imagination already. What a fascinating story-teller! Kids' imaginations seem so absurd at times, yet come to think of it, the most to the point. Man is but a small black dot in this universe, what else? :)
    Hugs to the champ!
